Key Points

Start preparing yourself and your kids a few years before the kids move out of the house. Teach them to think independently and be responsible. Don't enable them-- empower them. It's ok to let your child make mistakes sometimes!

Finding new friendships is like dating. But you have to move out of your comfort zone because this is a new life.

You can feel the fear and do it anyway; fear and excitement sometimes feel the same in your mind/body.

What You Can Do

Practice self-care. We are no good to our kids if we don't take care of ourselves.

Be accountable to yourself; stop cancelling on yourself. Tie an anchor to your goals.

To meet new people and make friends, experiment and try different interest groups. You can take a class or volunteer-- it doesn't have to be a long commitment.

Do not allow fear to rule your life.
